What’s the hype about CBD in Skincare?

There is a growing buzz around CBD within the skincare industry. Magazines such as vogue have extensively featured CBD and Cult Beauty has a dedicated page to CBD skincare. In and amongst all of the hype, there is still some confusion and misunderstanding about CBD as a skincare ingredient. A couple of common questions are, what is CBD exactly, and can you get “high” from using it?

Let’s kick things off with what it is. CBD stands for cannabidiol and it can be found in the different varieties of cannabis, such as hemp, indica and sativa.

In the UK, indica and sativa are controlled substances. The reason for this is that they are high in THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the compound that makes people “high”. Hemp on the other hand, the cousin of the marijuana plant, is low in THC but high in CBD. It doesn’t have the psychoactive properties, which means, put simply, it won’t get you “high”.

So what are the benefits of CBD? For starters, alongside being a beauty skincare ingredient, it also said to come under the realm of a “wellness” ingredient.

The main allure of CBD is its skin soothing properties. It is great for sensitive or irritated skin and can help calm skin conditions such as eczema.

Not only is it good for drier skin types but it also helps to balance oily and congested skin, as it helps to regulate the skin’s sebum. CBD molecules are small in size, which enables them to easily penetrate the epidermis (outer layer of the skin).

As CBD is derived from a plant, it is packed with antioxidants. Antioxidants help fight free radical damage. This means it helps to reduce inflammation of the skin and helps to reduce signs of ageing.
